Early Somali tradition
Early Somalis and Food
For early Somalis, food was not considered something of great importance. Seeing a pot on the fire three times a day was something surprising.
They were nomadic pastoralists who often faced hunger. They adopted a way of life based on hard work and eating little.
They have proverbs about that. Eg:
“I am in need; I should not be eaten by beasts.”
Meaning: Desire cannot be controlled completely nor satisfied however it wishes; one must not become a slave to the stomach.
Meaning: When greed exceeds its limits, it ultimately destroys itself; think carefully about what your desire is chasing.
“One should not hide one’s stomach with disgrace.”
Meaning: One should not sacrifice dignity for what merely fills the stomach.
“One endures hunger but does not beg.”
Meaning: In times of hardship, dignity is not for sale; patience brings goodness.
“What you cannot obtain should be treated as something you do not need.”
Meaning: Do not pursue obsessively what is beyond your reach.
