Discipline is key to building strength.

Discipline is the key to building strength.

When a man is born, his mother gives him love and proper nourishment: pure camel milk, good food, and care. But after the age of three, the period of discipline begins. This stage prepares him to become strong and responsible.

At first, he is taught to herd goats and return home before sunset. Later, as he grows older, he takes part in protecting and feeding camels. When he reaches adulthood, he carries full responsibility for his family.

Through these stages—herding camels, protecting livestock from wild animals, participating in Somali customary law, and facing daily challenges—he is not being harmed. Instead, he is learning responsibility, resilience, and problem-solving.

This upbringing prevents a man from remaining dependent at the age of thirty, unaware of his duties in life.

That is how traditional Somali society raised strong and responsible men.
